What Does the Bible Say About Age Gaps in Relationships? A Scripture-Based Perspective

Age differences in romantic relationships have always sparked discussion. People wonder whether large age gaps affect compatibility, maturity, or the long-term health of a marriage. But what does the Bible actually say about couples who are not close in age?

Interestingly, when we turn to Scripture, we find no passage that condemns or discourages age differences between husbands and wives. Instead of focusing on numbers, the Bible consistently highlights spiritual maturity, godly character, and unity in faith as the foundations of a healthy marriage.

Below, we explore what the Bible does—and does not—teach about age differences in marriage.

Biblical Example: Abraham and Sarah

One of the few biblical couples whose ages are clearly mentioned is Abraham and Sarah. Scripture notes that Abraham was 100 and Sarah was 90 when God promised them a child (Genesis 17:17), showing they had a ten-year age span.

“Will a child be born to a man who is a hundred years old? Will Sarah bear a child at the age of ninety?” — Genesis 17:17 (NIV)

Although the Bible acknowledges the age gap, it never portrays it as an obstacle or something spiritually questionable. The emphasis is completely on God’s promise and the miracle of Isaac’s birth—not on the difference in their ages.

What About Mary and Joseph?

Some traditions claim Joseph may have been older than Mary. However, Scripture does not give their ages. The Gospels highlight Joseph’s obedience and righteousness (Matthew 1:19–24), not the age difference between the two.

Because the Bible does not record their ages, any assumptions fall outside of the biblical text itself.

Does Scripture Consider Age Difference Important?

The Bible offers principles for choosing a spouse, but none of them focus on age. Instead, Scripture emphasizes:

1. Shared faith

“Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers.” — 2 Corinthians 6:14 (ESV)

Mutual belief and spiritual alignment are essential.

2. God’s design for marriage

“…a man shall leave his father and mother and be united to his wife…” — Genesis 2:24 (NIV)

Marriage is defined by commitment, covenant, and unity—not age.

3. Pure motives and Christlike love

“Do everything in love.” — 1 Corinthians 16:14 (NIV)

Marriage must be rooted in genuine love, not selfishness.

4. Godly discernment

“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God…” — James 1:5 (NIV)

Age differences may create practical challenges, but Scripture leaves room for Christian couples to seek God’s guidance about what is best for them personally.

Modern Perspectives vs. Biblical Silence

In today’s society, large age gaps often raise eyebrows and lead to judgment—especially when an older man dates a younger woman. But cultural discomfort is not the same as biblical teaching.

The Bible does not prohibit age differences between consenting adults.

However, age gaps involving teenagers or someone significantly older raise legal, ethical, and emotional concerns and must be handled with wisdom and caution. Scripture commands believers to act with integrity, purity, and respect.

For adult couples, though, age differences are not inherently immoral or unbiblical.

Many Christian marriages with notable age gaps thrive because they are grounded in faith, maturity, and mutual respect.

What Should Christians Focus On When Choosing a Spouse?

Instead of centering on age, Scripture encourages believers to ask deeper questions:

  • Is this person pursuing Christ wholeheartedly?

  • Do we share the same spiritual goals and values?

  • Do we treat each other with love, humility, and respect?

  • Are we entering this relationship with pure motives?

If the relationship honors God and both individuals are mature, legal adults, age becomes a secondary consideration—not a biblical barrier.

Age Gaps Are Not a Spiritual Obstacle

Ultimately, the Bible neither condemns nor warns against age differences in marriage. Its silence suggests that age is not one of God’s primary concerns in determining relational compatibility.

What truly matters is that couples:

  • Walk together in faith,

  • Love each other sacrificially,

  • Seek God’s wisdom,

  • And build a relationship marked by honor and mutual devotion.

Whether the gap is two years or twelve, Christians are encouraged to focus on biblical principles—not cultural assumptions—when discerning lifelong partnerships.
