In an incredible tale of canine motherhood, Nellie, a Dalmatian, has captured international attention by giving birth to 18 puppies, a number that far exceeds the typical size for a first litter.
This unexpected event unfolded in April 2020, leaving her breeder, Louise Clement, in awe.
Nellie is a three-year-old Dalmatian who underwent a 14-hour labor to welcome 18 puppies—10 males and eight females—into the world.
Louise Clement, who has been breeding Dalmatians for 30 years, described the experience as nothing short of amazing.
The puppies seemed to keep coming, far beyond the expected number as Nellie surprised everyone by continuing to deliver after initially appearing to finish at 15.
Each puppy was safely delivered with Clement’s assistance, then carefully weighed and differentiated using colored collars.
Nellie belongs to the Dalmatian breed, historically known as “coach dogs,” a role that involved accompanying horse-drawn carriages, particularly in noble societies and fire brigades.
These dogs are cherished for their loyalty, affectionate nature, and unique spotted coats.
At her home, Clement takes care of 27 dogs, providing them with plenty of outdoor space and engaging activities. She plans to keep one of Nellie’s puppies and will find new homes for the remaining 17 once they are ready to leave their mother.
Despite Nellie’s astonishing achievement, the world record for the largest Dalmatian litter is held by a dog named Melody from Australia, who birthed 19 puppies in 2019.
Melody’s breeder, Melissa O’Brien, noted the healthy condition and pleasant temperament of the puppies.
