A poor, lonely 13-year-old boy named Ethan Hough becomes an unexpected hero when he investigates why his neighbor’s dog, Rocky, won’t stop barking. Ethan’s family struggles financially, living paycheck to paycheck after taking out a loan to pay for his mother’s treatment during the early days of the pandemic. Ethan’s parents, focused on his success, keep him isolated from other kids, fearing bullying due to their financial situation. One day, Ethan hears his neighbor, Carla, an elderly woman with no family, and her dog barking incessantly. After his father dismisses his concern, Ethan decides to investigate and discovers Carla lying motionless on the sofa, unable to move. He calls 911, and she is rushed to the hospital.
Carla later passes away, but before her death, she leaves her house to Ethan’s family as a thank you for his help.
