Most mothers would agree that pregnancy and childbirth can be frightening, and all you hope for is a healthy baby who comes into the world crying and strong.
But one mother faced a heartbreaking situation when her newborn son arrived with serious medical complications that left him dependent on a ventilator.
Lisa Hough shared a photo of her precious newborn grandson, born to her daughter Chelsea, along with the devastating decision her daughter had been forced to make.
The grandmother of two explained that baby Karson entered the world with multiple medical issues.
According to Lisa, the baby had experienced two extremely rare and unrelated medical conditions. On Facebook, she revealed that Karson had a hemorrhage in the left temporal lobe and was diagnosed with a rare genetic metabolic disorder called Non-ketotic hyperglycinemia (NKH).
Doctors warned that his condition was severe and would likely leave him profoundly neurologically impaired, functioning at the level of a 2–3-month-old for life.
Faced with this information, his mother made the agonizing decision to remove him from life support.
Lisa described the heartbreaking moment when family members gathered to say goodbye.
They were told that after the ventilator was taken away, Karson would not breathe on his own and that his heart would likely stop within ten minutes.
But, as Lisa wrote, “God had other plans.”
The moment the ventilator was removed, Karson began breathing on his own. His heart rate and oxygen levels stabilized, and hours later, he was still fighting — showing signs doctors said would never be possible.

He was breathing unaided.
He was swallowing.
He even opened his eyes a few times.
His medical team had no explanation. They said there was no scientific reason for his survival — calling it nothing short of a miracle.
Lisa expressed deep gratitude, acknowledging she didn’t know how much time they would have with him, but she cherished every moment.
Then, on March 1, the family received joyous news: baby Karson would be able to go home that week.
Lisa wrote that she was overwhelmed with gratitude, praising God for her grandson’s life.
Support poured in online from thousands of people who followed Karson’s journey, celebrating his survival and cheering on his continued progress.
